Description:

Texas rancher Nathaniel Meier always puts his responsibilities first. With his father dead, his brothers away, and his mother off “finding herself,” it’s Nat who runs their sprawling ranch. But with cattle to sell and the bank breathing down his neck, he needs all the help he can get, even when that help comes from the last person he ever expected to see again—his childhood sweetheart January Rose.

Free-spirited January always dreamed of traveling the world. The moment she turned eighteen, she left Close Call, Texas behind and barely looked back. So now that she’s home, she intends to stay only long enough to earn some cash and get back on the road. But when she comes face to face with Nat Meier, she quickly realizes the boy she left behind is now all man.

Even for a nomad like January, wanderlust sometimes gets lonely, and Nat is the one person who’s called to her, even after a decade apart. But for a man ruled by responsibility and a woman whose suitcase is her home, the future is uncertain. And the closer they get, the more Nat worries he’s going to get burned…again.

Review:

I’m going to be honest, I was drawn to this book because of the drool-worthy cover. There’s just something about cowboy hats…

Firstly, I have to commend the author for talking about the smell of the pasture. It’s certainly unique and remembering that smell brought me right back to my childhood. It seems way too many books forget to write about the smell of places, especially if it’s not something anyone would want to bottle up and buy as a perfume.

January was a super likable character. For the last 10 years, she’s been traveling the world. Living the life and sending strategic postcards back home. The thought of staying in one place for too long feels suffocating for her. She’s also super sweet and names all the animals on the ranch.

This is a second chance romance. 10 years ago, January and Nathanial were in love. She ripped his heart out when she left to fulfill her dream of traveling the world. When she unexpectedly returns to town there is still an undeniable connection between the two of them. Understandably, Nathanial isn’t willing to risk experiencing that hurt again.

I absolutely love when animals capture my heart in books and the cow and calf, Reece and Mae, managed to do that. They were adorable. Their personalities and the way January interacted with them was my favorite part of the book.

Tempting the Rancher was a good story, I found the characters relatable, and the struggles they faced felt realistic. However, my one big complaint, and I mentally took 2 stars off for this, is that I was bored. I didn’t see an introduction, rising tension, climax and resolution like I do in most books. It was simply moderate tension and resolution. The idea for the story was great in theory. But, on paper, it lacked enough drama and action to keep me interested. I felt as though I was reading the same concerns and situations over and over again.

With that said, I had to add another star for the epilogue. It tied everything up exactly the way I had hoped and left me with a smile on my face.

Overall, Tempting the Rancher was a solid read if you enjoy stories about life on a ranch. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light read that will leave you with a smile on your face.

If you like books about ranchers as much as I do, you might enjoy Ryders Ridge or The Reluctant Rancher.

Since I’m sure we can all use a little Monday pick me up, I’ve included some pictures of my favorite cowboy hats. Enjoy!
