Where the River Bends differs greatly from the stories I usually read. This book was set in South Africa, a location I haven’t bookationed to before. It was beautifully written with depth  not often found in romance novels.

Review

Kalinda and Zack’s love story was intricately woven between historical facts about the Anglo-Boer war and a ghost story.

On paper, I shouldn’t have enjoyed this book. I avoid paranormal romances like the plague, I don’t appreciate history as much as I should and I detest the parts of our history where we kill each other for stupid reasons. Yet I couldn’t seem to walk away. Perhaps it was the adorable cover that pulled by in. Whatever it was, I found myself enthralled by this story right to the very last page.

You see, I made myself a cup of coffee and curled up on the couch intending to read a few pages and decide if I should add this one to my schedule. Five hours later the book was finished and my coffee was cold.

For a book that I’m going to recommend to pretty much everyone who will listen, this is actually a difficult review to write. I don’t want to accidentally give anything away because I think this book is best approached without expectations.

This was a sweet romance with just enough hints of darkness to keep things interesting. It was clean enough to recommend to my mother but the ending is still satisfying.

Overall Where the River Bends was a beautiful story that had me captured in its pages from start to finish. I want to say it would make a good beach read. But if you’re anything like me you’ll forget to reapply your sunscreen and end up burnt. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon curled up on the couch.
