Transgender Characters in Romance Novels

Transgender Romance Novels are such a rare and welcome treat to read. Over my years as an avid romance reader, I’ve realized there is a real lack of books sharing stories of the trans experience. Which is probably why I always find myself so excited every time I hear a love story featuring a transgender character is going to be released.

As much as I only read romance, I try to read stories about diverse characters with life experiences that are different from my own. I think transgender representation in books is an important step in increasing education and decreasing stigma.

With that said, I should also probably admit the first transgender love story I bought sat on my Kindle for weeks as I tried to work myself up to read it. It was called Starting from Scratch by Jay Northcote – an author I had read and loved many times before.

I know, you’re probably staring at this list and wondering where to start, I can’t recommend Jay’s book enough. Not only was it a compelling story, but it was incredibly education. The opening pages of the book feature a glossary which explains terms like dysphoria and packer. It provided the educational foundation I needed to read other trans books that didn’t provide as much background information. Not going to lie, it probably saved me a few dozen awkward google searches.

If you’re looking for you next diverse read, searching for a story that will help you feel less alone, or looking for a heart warming happy ending, these books won’t disappoint.
